The Hopkins

Family Session in the Yarra Valley

Family of four standing amidst golden grass, mum is holding little boy up in the air and the little girl is sitting on Dad's shoulders.

Clients often ask me why I only book Family Sessions at the end of the day, even though it may not be the most convenient time of day for people’s schedules. I get it—summer sessions can run late for the littlest ones. It’s right after you’ve just gotten home from work or maybe right when dinner is normally be starting. But there is no other time of day that makes this sort of magic (OK, maybe dawn but I can’t say I am at my most creative when even the birds aren’t awake yet…).

Golden light is what I feel every childhood memory should be bathed in, because all perfect memories should be a little bit rose tinted… I know I bang on about golden hour, but it honestly makes such a difference to your final images. Even if you aren’t lucky enough to get golden sunshine (ahem, Melbourne, ahem…) the last light of the day is soft, dreamy and sooooo much more flattering than harsh overhead daylight that gives you panda eyes and highlights every wrinkle, bump and wobbly bit. If you are making the effort to capture your memories, it just makes sense that you would want them to look the absolute best- even if it means pushing dinner back a bit!

The Hopkins did just that at their Family Session in December so that we could capture the magic that is them! It is the third time I have had the privilege to run around and play with this little family while holding a camera and I absolutely adore them- although I swear the kiddos double in size every time I blink…. Her sassy little personality and his independent nature sure keep mum and dad on their toes and I cannot wait to see how much they have grown by the time our next family session rolls around!
